What is a Favicon ?

Wikipedia best describes what is the favicon is words as “A favicon (short for favorite icon), also known as a shortcut icon, website icon, tab icon, URL icon, or bookmark icon, is a file containing one or more small icons, associated with a particular website or web page.”

Why favicon is useful and how does the favicon looks like ?

When we browse the internet we visit many websites, and as we continue to explore the things on internet we keep on opening the websites in different browser tabs. So at some point we have so many websites open that we get confused which tab to open if we want to visit some web page which we were working on or has already opened.

This is where favicon’s are useful. Favicon gives an icon to the browser tab, so if we have many tabs open we can just look at icon and visit the web page. The favicon of each tab may look as below,

In above image, we had 4 websites open in browser tab, but By looking at icon’s we can easily identify that first tab is Google Search, second is Google Drive, Third is Firebase, but what is fourth tab…??? we can’t identify as it has generic globe icon.

This is where Favicon’s play important role to identify browser tabs. In our next post, we demonstrate “How to create favicon from image online ?”
