Increase website page speed using Image optimisations

In our first port, we listed some tools for identifying pages, images which took more time to download. From this post, most useful tool could be “Firefox plugin” , check the section “Firefox web-developer toolbar” from that post, to identify images which took more time for downloading.

1) Refer GIMP website section “Preparing your Images for the Web  , as per this website two things are useful,

  1. An image with fewer colors, such as a button, icon, or screenshot, is better suited to the PNG format.
  2.  If you have any other image, convert the images formats to “jpeg” with as minimum quality during export to jpeg. Open your image in gimp, goto “File -> Export As” , rename to filename.jpeg, select “JPEG Image” from dropdown and click “Export”, in newly opened window, reduce quality as much as possible and looks good for your website. This will reduce the size of image considerably and also will not affect the quality as visible.

2) Use “GTMetrix” website for website analysis, from home page of this, enter your URL and click Analyse. Once the analysis is complete, check “Optimize Images” section. This will give you details of which images needs optimisation but along with this, it also gives you an option to download the ready optimised image, check “See optimised version” in-front of every suggestion.

3) Use very small background image and tile it.

Check our another blog, this uses a very simple image (png) as a grid, and sets the background color to change the background look. Such tiling of small image reduces the use of high size background image resulting in speedy website download.
