Resolve: Media Player Stops / Hangs the Ubuntu Linux while Video Playing

When we upgraded our Ubuntu version to 23.04, and tried to play some of the videos we had on our machine, we observed that system was getting considerably slower, sometimes hangs and we just have to wait or restart the machine.

This issue was observed many times, so we identified the problem as.. when we start the video playback using double click, it was opening the video using default “totem” media player.

So, the solution to the problem was …. remove the totem media player completely using below command,

$ sudo apt-get purge totem

Now, once the totem player is uninstalled completely, and now if we open the videos, it opened videos using VLC media player and our system started working properly.. so the problem was with totem media player itself and as we have some other media player like VLC as an alternative, we started using VLC as default media player.

If you dont have VLC media player you can install it as,

$ sudo apt-get install vlc
